The Basics of Zip Ties
We dare say that cable ties or more popular as zip ties might just be the best thing mankind created. In 1958, these secure cable ties were created by Thomas & Betts as a solution to secure wirings in an airplane. Today, zip ties are more than just airplane wiring security. It serves many different purposes and over time, has developed many different varieties.
The beauty of zip ties is that they are really simple to use but the opportunities of using it in many different aspects. They can even be used in law enforcement, believe it or not.
We all know the common zip tie. But, today, there are already many different variants that are used for more specific purposes. The uses of these zip tie variations range from a simple organization of wires behind appliances to a more heavy-duty one like holding together a tarp.
Most of these variants work the same way. There is a ratcheting lever that locks with the one-way ramps. The lever is most commonly made of the same material but there are specialty ties that make use of metal levers. These specialty ties are more durable than the normal nylon ties.
Different Variants of Zip Ties
1. Standard Nylon Zip Ties: This is the most common type and the classic one. Nylon zip ties can range from light ones that are easy to snap with your hands or the heavy duty ones that are more durable.
2. Security Zip Ties: These ties are thicker and more durable compared to the standard ones. They are made mainly to restrain suspects they are tamper-proof, which means they cannot be easily undone with a normal pin.
3. Specialty Zip Ties: These ties are made to serve a single and specific purpose. An example would be the radiator zip ties that are made to made to secure the radiator fins.
4. Stainless Steel Zip Ties: This type of zip tie is useful if you are planning on using it somewhere with high heat or when you are trying to secure heavier items.
5. Food Grade Zip Ties: These zip ties are used mainly for securing food in containers. These zip ties are colored blue to make them easily visible so as to avoid getting mixed with the food.
Using a Zip Tie
The good thing about zip ties is that they are really easy to use. Even without reading some sort of a manual, an average person can learn how to use them in no time.
First, load the tail of the strap to the head and start pulling. You will know that you have done this part correctly because you will hear a click. Moreover, it is also possible to tie it together backward, making the ramps upside down and not in contact with the locking lever. This does not reduce the efficiency of the tie. It just prevents accidental locking.
The very important thing to note when working with secure cable ties is to make sure you are using the right one for your purpose. For example, you may just want to organize and secure the wiring behind a component. The standard zip tie might work but if you are dealing with thick and numerous wires, it would be a better idea to use a more durable type of tie
